Chief Justice Raymond Zondo’s remarks that President Cyril Ramaphosa’s election as ANC leader spared the country from “further damage” have prompted a judicial misconduct complaint against him. Although the complaint itself lacks merit, it’s a timely reminder about the risk to judicial independence caused by judges participating in commissions of inquiry.

On 25 August 2021 the JSC announced their decision to uphold the findings of the Tribunal and voted to impeach Judge Hlophe for gross misconduct.
The JSC was scheduled to continue its deliberations on Judge President J M Hlophe on Friday. This meeting has been postponed to 25 August 2021.
The Hlophe matter returns to the JSC on 30 July 2021, for a decision on how to deal with the Western Cape judge president John Hlophe.
