2024 has been a standout year for Judges Matter, with significant strides in keeping South Africans informed about the judiciary and ensuring accountability in the judicial appointment process. From transparency in judge selection to sparking national conversations, our work continues to show that South Africans care deeply about how the judiciary operates.

Judges Matter has been dedicated to shedding light on the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) interviews and emphasising their crucial role in shaping our democracy since 2016.

We’ve consistently emphasised that the process of appointing judges affects everyone and must remain transparent and open for public review – the numbers on the JSC interviews 2024 prove that South Africans agree.

By late November 2024, the Judges Matter YouTube channel reached an impressive 708 636 views, up 32% compared to last year. These viewers collectively watched 163 898 hours of content –  a 59% increase. It’s clear that South Africans are engaging more deeply with this crucial content. The Judges Matter subscriber base also grew significantly, with 2 976 new subscribers, a 51% increase from the previous year, bringing the total to 20 642 as of late November – and this is all organic growth! With 10.2% of subscribers turning on notifications (compared to the platform average of 10–30%), it’s also clear that audiences value staying connected to this content.

October’s JSC interviews 2024 were a major highlight. On 16 October 2024, the last day of interviews, we saw 39 443 views in a single day – the year’s biggest view peak – and welcomed 145 new subscribers in just 24 hours. It’s evident that South Africans want to stay informed during these pivotal moments.

With 7.8 million video impressions across the year, Judges Matter continues to lead the charge in ensuring transparency and engagement with South Africa’s judicial process. Here are the most-watched JSC interviews of 2024.
