Candidate Bio:
Advocate Hein Brauckmann believes in “living the law” in passion and integrity. As a legal practitioner, he is always well prepared and professional, and he has imparted these skills and virtues to his candidate attorneys and professional assistants. From 2004, he only employed women as candidate attorneys and professional assistants in an effort to play his role in transforming the gender bias and prejudice against women in the legal profession.

The member of the National Bar Council of South Africa started out his career as a defense attorney in criminal law and has since specialized in different areas of law such as insolvency, commercial litigation, labour law, and divorce proceedings. He was a commissioner in the Small Claims Court for four years.

Advocate Brauckmann was first appointed as an acting judge in January 2018 and has since been appointed during different court terms in the Gauteng Division of the High Court and the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court. As an acting judge, he set aside the decision of the Dr Pixley Isaka Local Municipality to construct a pipeline in a case that involved a bulk water pipeline project, W v Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Local Municipality. Brauckmann AJ interdicted the construction until the municipality had obtained an environmental authorisation order in line with the National Environmental Management Act that was enacted to give effect to the environmental rights in section 24 of the Constitution.

He holds a B.Iuris (1983) and LLB (1985) from the University of the Free State.
