Candidate Biography | Updated September 2025:

Advocate Mpumelelo Sibisi is an advocate at the Durban bar.

Advocate Mpumelelo Prosper Sibisi is an experienced legal practitioner and judicial officer whose career reflects both professional depth and an unwavering commitment to the values of South Africa’s constitutional democracy.

Sibisi holds an LLB degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and began his legal career as a candidate attorney at Nhlanhla Mnculwan, Inc. He then worked as an associate at Friedman & Associates from 2001  to 2002. Sibisi worked as an attorney until 2011, when he was admitted to practice as an advocate. He then established himself in litigation across a wide range of fields. His practice exposed him to constitutional, administrative, commercial, and criminal law, and he has appeared in matters of significance requiring strong analytical skills and an ability to balance the requirements of precedent with the demands of justice.

His judicial career is marked by a substantial body of work as an acting judge in the High Court. In that role, Sibisi has presided over an extensive array of matters, producing judgments that reflect clarity of thought, fidelity to constitutional principles, and a practical appreciation for the impact of legal outcomes on litigants. Advocate Sibisi has served nine stints on the bench between 2023 and the current year, four stints at the Pietermaritzburg High Court and five at the Durban High Court, where he was responsible for both criminal and civil cases,

In the case of Zamisa, Sibisi demonstrated a clear ability to balance the need for justice and context-specific engagement with cogent legal principles. This case followed the kidnapping and subsequent murders of a mother and daughter by a different mother and daughter pair. This was a case with a lot of moving pieces, significant witness testimony and complex cultural and community issues, which Sibisi AJ needed to balance with his engagement with the doctrine of common purpose.

Advocate Sibisi’s career has also been complemented by service to the broader legal profession. He has served as the Chairperson of the Tax Board since 2018 and spent roughly three years (2021-2024) sitting as a part-time adjudicator for the Community Schemes Ombud service. This quasi-judicial experience could be said to bolster his experience as an acting judge for the KwaZulu-Natal Division of the High Court.

He has engaged in mentorship and support for emerging legal practitioners, thereby contributing to the development of the next generation of lawyers. He sits on the Pupillage Committee for the Durban Bar, has mentored a number of pupils and has engaged with local law students who hope to one day enter advocacy.

His leadership within professional associations further reflects his investment in the integrity of the legal system and the advancement of previously disadvantaged persons. This can be seen through his involvement with the GUD Transformation Trust and Filpro, which looks to help upskill young, black mechanics, finance their entry into the aftermarket automotive industry and promote safety in the taxi industry.

In sum, advocate Sibisi’s experience and qualities could recommend him as a candidate capable of contributing meaningfully to the development of South Africa’s jurisprudence and the strengthening of its judiciary.
